This workshop focused on the conceptual ideas surrounding Wilfred Ukpong's Blazing Century project, which is set within geographical locations embroiled in social and environmental devastation. It considered cross-sector creative strategies that enable young artists and creative practitioners in Lagos to become "agents of social and environmental change", a phrase that is central to the field of socially-engaged art practice. Wilfred Ukpong is an interdisciplinary artist who works between photography, film, sculpture, installation and performance. Since 2011, he has developed a long term project in the Niger Delta that explores environmental concerns through a fictional and futuristic lens. During his residency at the Arthouse Foundation, Wilfred created another chapter in his ten-part Blazing Century project, dealing with the contextual issues facing Makoko in its constant threat of eviction and demolition.
